Last May, 23-year-old Queenslander Byron Haddow thought two weeks of partying in Bali would not only be the perfect holiday, it would be perfectly safe. But four days after arriving, something terrible happened at the villa where he was staying, and Byron died. Despite three other Australians being with him at the time, local police haven’t been able to determine the exact circumstances of what happened, or even Byron’s exact cause of death. 60 Minutes investigates vital new evidence which could piece together the last moments of this young man’s life.

Bali is the most popular holiday destination for Australians, but it’s also becoming one of the most dangerous. The Indonesian island has hosted a string of boating accidents this year, one of them fatal. In March, Australian woman Anna Blight was on a snorkelling trip with 10 other travellers, when the Sea Dragon 2 boat capsized.

This Wednesday though marks 20 years since that awful night when its popularity turned into a deadly curse. Terrorists detonated two bombs at two packed nightclubs, killing 202 people including 88 Australians. Young nurse Therese Fox was among those horrifically injured. 85% of her body was burnt; that she even survived is miraculous.Therese has never spoken publicly about her remarkable battle to live, but tonight that changes as she puts demons to rest by returning to Bali.

No one disputes that patrolling Australia’s extensive sea borders is a difficult job, but it shouldn’t be impossible. Off the north-west coasts of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, the task of stopping people trying to enter the country illegally is primarily the responsibility of the Australian Border Force. But in this joint 60 MINUTES, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age investigation, Nick McKenzie reports how broken our borders have become because the ABF is failing. And as a consequence, the people smugglers have again been plying their evil trade.
